Friendship Centre

The program currently operates out of our Skinner Street site on Wednesday 2:30-6:30 and Saturday 10:30 – 2:30 with a maximum of 18 members on each day. It is designed for seniors aged 55+ experiencing severe and persistent mental illness.

The program offers members a variety of activities designed to increase independence, self-esteem, socialization and general well-being, and to decrease future hospitalization due to mental health concerns.

Client transportation is via HandyDART, and members are encouraged to become comfortable accessing the HandyDART services to increase their independence. Program staff and members work together to plan the monthly calendar of fun and engaging activities that build friendships among members, enhance social skills, increase self-esteem, and lead to a more active and healthy life for our members. Each program day a nutritious meal is prepared and served in an environment that fosters a sense of unity among the group and creates the opportunity for lively discussions among members.

Referrals for the Friendship Centre are received through physicians, psycho-geriatric programs such as Kenning/Watson 2, Elderly Outreach Services, and Mental Health Services. Participants must have a mental health diagnosis. Please contact Katie Bloy for further information.
