Welcome to NetWorks. We are a supported Employment Program that serves people who are experiencing barriers to employment as a result of mental illness or addictions. A supported employment program offers one to one assistance for job seekers in meeting their employment goals and can offer continual support once work has been obtained or if a job loss occurs.

Our program focuses on getting you into a job search as soon as possible. There are no groups to attend, no pre-employment workshops, just lots of support to get you into the workforce.

We understand your mental illness or addiction. We can help to problem solve with you about your mental illness and its impact in the workplace, to find solutions or accommodations that will allow you to be successful.

We offer as much or as little support as you want, however, we do not provide a résumé service only. If this is something you need please see the Employment section of the Resources page. The Resources page also has links to articles on employment and mental illness.  We do not offer wage subsidies to employers, or have a group of employers ready to hire you. Our role is to help you to find, and keep, competitive, paid employment….because we believe you can.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • You have a mental illness or addiction and you want to work.
  • You are willing to commit to attending weekly meetings with your employment coach.
  • You are connected to the health care system. This means you receive support from a doctor, case-manager, psychiatrist or other health care professional AND that you are willing to work with your health care professional to follow a treatment plan for your mental illness or addiction.

Our trained staff is experienced in all aspects of the employment process and can assist you with résumé writing, interview practice, job search, the application process and problem solving.

You can discuss your mental illness or addiction openly with your coach. We can help you identify how your mental illness may impact your employment, and help you to problem solve, seek accommodations if appropriate, and work with your health care provider or support network to ensure that you have the best chance of being successful in the workplace.

Finding work can be a stressful experience. We offer you the support you need to get you through the inevitable emotional ups and downs of finding and keeping work. What can I expect when I start at NetWorks?

The focus of NetWorks is on undertaking a rapid job search. However, to do that most successfully we need to know a bit about you. You will be asked questions about yourself, your mental illness and addiction, and if it has impacted you in the workplace. This is called an employment assessment. It will identify the things you are good at, your strengths, and the areas you need to work on to be successful in finding and keeping employment.

We will work with you to create an employment plan that will focus on the areas where you need support to improve your chances of being successful with your job search. Our role is to offer guidance, practical support, feedback, and skill building so that you will feel confident in applying for paid competitive employment.

The model of employment support we use at NetWorks is most effective when we work with other people who are supporting you, whether health care professionals, family or friends. We ask you to identify other people who you wish to be involved as part of your support team, people we can talk to for further information about your needs, or just someone who is there to give you support that you trust and would like involved in the process.

Is the support time limited?

Most people who use our service gradually need less support as they become more confident at work. We will work with you as long as you need the service to find or keep employment and as long as you continue to connect with your coach. Sometimes people take a break, or don’t need us for a while, then come back for support later.

How long does it take to find work?

The time it takes to find work varies for each individual. Your commitment to the process is key, the more motivated you are the quicker you will find work. An average is 3-6 months, and 90% of the clients who attend regularly find their first job within 6 months of starting the program.

To be successful requires a commitment from you. Plan to attend weekly meetings with your coach, be willing to look at job advertisements and take active steps towards meeting your employment goals in your own between appointments. Be open to feedback from your employment coach and try different approaches. Make finding a job a full time job.
